Top 10 Albums:
1. Alexisonfire released their most anticipated record of their career (so far) on August 22nd, 2006. Ever since I heard the first song of the new record (â┚¬Ã…”This Could Be Anywhere In The Worldâ┚¬?), I knew this record would be amazing. It has become one of those records that you can listen to five times in a row and never get tired of it. â┚¬Ã…”Crisisâ┚¬? was a huge step for Alexisonfire and they have headed in a new direction. Even though they still hold their distinct sound, they managed to progress into something more mature and meaningful. The vocals are outstanding, with Dallas Greenâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s impressive singing and George Pettitâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s distinctive screaming. The music is addictive and creative enough to leave you humming for days.
2. I remember hearing about Set Your Goals and noticing the hype circling around them. I decided to give them a shot and I was hooked. They are catchy, upbeat, and positive. â┚¬Ã…”Mutinyâ┚¬? was something everyone was looking forwarded to and when released, everyone couldnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t stop talking about it. Even though the record is only 30 minutes long, itâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s still one of the best records. With this released, Set Your Goals will lift up your spirit, put a smile on your face, and create the anthem for 2006. This record established a incredibly large fan base and put Set Your Goals as one of the bands to watch in the upcoming years. Seeing what they accomplished in 2006, I can only imagine what they will get done in 2007.
3. No matter what genre someone listens to, everyone manages to fall in love with MewithoutYou. Not only is their music unique and different in a sea copycats, they are the most genuine guys you will ever meet. â┚¬Ã…”Brother, Sisterâ┚¬? was released and it showcased a new approach for the band. The music is still creative, but there is more singing then yelling. The lyrics are more about God and religion. Regardless of the different approach taken, this is one of the greatest records of 2006. Itâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s relaxing and something you can listen to, and get inspired. No matter if you are Christian, Jewish, or atheist, this record will leave you in amazement and addicted.
4. Jonezetta signed to Tooth and Nail Records and no one knew anything about them. I havenâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t heard of them before, but I noticed that a lot of other bands were supporting them and spreading the word so I figured there must be something different to them. â┚¬Ã…”Popularityâ┚¬? was released and it established a sound for Jonezetta. The sound was catchy, techno-fused, and dance-type music. If going solely on genres, you could say that Panic At The Disco already owned this genre, but Panic has nothing on Jonezetta. This record showed their upbeat, catchy melodies but also their slower side. Jonezetta had a big year, but 2007 is going to even a greater year for them.
5. The hardcore scene is overpopulated with carbon copies of bands that all sound alike. The same theme in lyrics, the same riffs, the same overused sound. I came across a band that had their own sound, their own unique lyrics, and their overall essence that made them stand out. Sinking Ships came out with â┚¬Ã…”Disconnectingâ┚¬? and it incorporates elements of old-school hardcore and new age elements as well. The record is catchy and something new. The music is well crafted, the vocals are impressive, and the songs have a meaning. After the release of â┚¬Ã…”Disconnectingâ┚¬?, I felt hopeful for bands that are providing something new and not overplayed.
6. After a four year hiatus, Spitfire busted through the doors of the music scene with their highly anticipated â┚¬Ã…”Self-Helpâ┚¬?. Bringing a new sound to the table, Spitfire crafted something different than the Spitfire people were familiar with four years ago. This band consists of an all-star lineup consisting of members from Scarlet, Norma Jean, and Mae. When first listening to this record, I was overwhelmed with emotions. The songs are destructive and will leave you wanting more, like a heroine addict needing his fix. Jon Spencerâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s lyrics are unlike anything youâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ve heard before and will leave you falling in love with every single word. â┚¬Ã…”Self-Helpâ┚¬? is an amazing record with a unique, brutal sound that left everyone wanting more. If you havenâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t seen Spitfire live, I advise you to attend one of their shows; they manage to put on one of the best shows I have seen in 2006.
7. Converge is one of the biggest bands in the underground music scene. Creating brutal, fast paced music is their specialty, but they also manage to experiment with sounds and provide something distinctive. â┚¬Ã…”Heroesâ┚¬? was talked about ever since the news was released that they were recording a new record. The best thing about this record is the way it is structured. The record starts off with songs incorporating what they are known for; brutal, fast-paced music with the unique screams of Jacob Bannon. â┚¬Ã…”Heroesâ┚¬? is one of their best records, showcasing everything you thought they were capable of and everything you never expected from them.
8. Regardless what anyone says, hip-hop is an art form that is dying. The public has this view on hip-hop music that isnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t justified. Everyone thinks that hip-hop consists of songs about hoes, the ghetto, crack, money, and anything else talked about in the mainstream. The Roots have always created their own music and provided lyrics about issues going on in the world. â┚¬Ã…”Game Theoryâ┚¬? is by far one of my favorite hip-hop records this year. Itâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s experimental, and yet catchy. The lyrics are outstanding and the music is perfectly written. I listen to this record weekly and it revives my hope that hip-hop will resurrect from the ashes and show the world the art of spoken word.
9. I realized that everyone will be placing â┚¬Ã…”God And The Devil Are Raging Inside Meâ┚¬? by Brand New in their top 10 records of 2006, but I will still add it to my list. This record was by far one of the most anticipated records of this year. Everyone loves Brand New for their brutally honest lyrics, catchy chorus, and their ability to sing about the things we all deal with in our lives. This record is something completely different compared to their older stuff, but it was expected. Brand New has grown up and their music grew up along the process. Even if they decided to play bluegrass or rap music, they will still carry with them the essence that has made them so popularly known. This record is a masterpiece and one of the most outstanding records Iâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ve ever heard. The music is inspiring and the lyrics are real and honest. If this record isnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t already in your collection then I advise you to drop whatever you are doing (even reading this) and go buy it.
10. The Human Abstractâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s â┚¬Ã…”Nocturneâ┚¬? was one of the most impressive records in 2006. There are a wide range of genres and influences throughout the record, having a little something for everyone. I wonâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t go too much into this record because my review already explained a lot. This record is a masterpiece and gained The Human Abstract a huge fan base.
Top 3 EPâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s:
1. Oh, Sleeper has been getting a lot of hype considering they consist of members from Terminal and Between The Buried and Me, two highly respected the bands. Oh, Sleeperâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s debut EP from 1×1 Music, â┚¬Ã…”The Armored Marchâ┚¬?, consists of five songs that will leave you with in a daze and all the blood rushed to your head. The songs are heavy, but not typically written in the generic format of breakdowns. The songs consist of heavy parts that will leave you fueled, slow parts that will calm you down, and addictive parts that will leave you wanting an full length record from Oh, Sleeper as soon as possible.
2. After seeing Terminal live, I found out about their breaking up and I was at least glad I got to see them play live. One of the best things about Terminal was the compelling voice of Travis Bryant. Suddenly it was announced that Travis will be joining Goodbye Tomorrow. Goodbye Tomorrow released a self-tilted, three song EP this year, giving the fans a little taste of what is to come from the band. The three songs on this EP are masterfully written and provide something similar, yet similar to Terminal. 2007 is going to be a big year for Goodbye Tomorrow so I would get my hands on this EP and prepare yourself.
3. I never thought I would be listening to an EP that is entirely about pizza and ends with a song about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. HORSE The Band has become well known for their obsession with pizza and their humorous approach to music and their career. This record includes techno-driven keyboards, fast paced music, and singing/screaming about the magical deliciousness of pizza. This EP will leave you laughing straight through, but it will leaving you wanting more. HORSE The Band will leave you with an urge to sink your teeth into a slice of pizza and thinking â┚¬Ã…”Damn, pizza really is magical.â┚¬?
Top 3 Disappointments:
1. I was never too big of a fan of Matchbook Romance, but their older recordings were catchy and I often found myself listening to them. When I heard they were coming out with a new record, I was interested to see how it would sound. I figured that the band has progressed and matured, therefore â┚¬Ã…”Voicesâ┚¬? was going to be something great to listen to. The band also managed to over promote the new record, so it build up the hype, thinking they were going to release something impressive. I saw the band live shortly before â┚¬Ã…”Voicesâ┚¬?, and I was disappointed. I felt my eyelids closing and their new music was boring me to death. I was counting down till their set was over because I couldnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t take more of it. I came home and listen to some of their new songs and it still didnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t appeal to me. Matchbook Romanceâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s new record had a hype behind it but I found myself, along with other fans, disappointed with the new direction they decided to take and the bore of â┚¬Ã…”Voicesâ┚¬?.
2. Tooth and Nail Records has been known for signing outstanding bands that are successful in the industry. When I first heard of The Classic Crime, I was excited to hear what new music Tooth and Nail discovered. The first I heard from the band was â┚¬Ã…”The Fightâ┚¬? and I was impressed. It was a catchy, sing-along song driven with a strong passion. When I got the record in the mail to review, I wasnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t at all disappointed. It was a solid record that caught my attention. But the thing was, when I first heard of The Classic Crime, I thought they would create a record that was something I could never tired of nor ever want to stop listening to. After listening to â┚¬Ã…”Albatrossâ┚¬? several times and having my friends play it over and over, I found myself not wanting to listen to it. I expected an epic record that will always sound as impressive as it in the beginning, but it never reached that level. It isnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t a bad record at all, it just wasnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t what I was expecting from The Classic Crime.
3. Showbread has always been a band with their own sound and that is what made them stand out. I saw them live and they were hilarious and put on a great show. I talked to one of the members of the band and he was talking about the new record, and I began getting excited. â┚¬Ã…”No Sir, Nihilism Is Not Practicalâ┚¬? was a great record that is something new to listen to and catchy as well. â┚¬Ã…”Age Of Reptilesâ┚¬? has a few solid songs, but the rest are weak and not appealing. Iâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ve tried listening to this record and getting into it, but I just find myself getting into a few songs, and not caring about the rest of the songs. It was a disappointment because there was a lot of hype around Showbreadâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s new record, considering their previous record was loved amongst so many. â┚¬Ã…”Age Of Reptilesâ┚¬? was a disappointing move in their career but I hope they can mange to recover with their next release.
Best Live Show:
I saw MewithoutYou play an acoustic set at a local music store in Richmond, Virginia and it was the first time seeing them. I was blown away. Even though their music isnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t necessarily made for acoustic sets, they still managed to pull it off. They played all new songs, considering they were â┚¬Ã…”promotingâ┚¬? the new record â┚¬Ã…”Brother, Sisterâ┚¬? During the short set, I felt the hairs on my arms stand straight up, like soldiers lined up for combat. After the set, I interviewed Aaron Weiss and it was by far one of the greatest and most insightful interviews I have done. I left that night with wishing I could see play again. A week later, I was in Norfolk witness one of the best shows Iâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ve seen. They get into their music, as if the sounds were entering their veins. Aaron danced around while singing and itâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s truly something to see. He also threw roses around the stage and they played the show like it was their last show ever. If you havenâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t seen MewithoutYou play live before, then I suggest buying tickets to their next show in your area and prepare yourself to witness something inspiring and impressive.
Best New Band:
I was introduced to Callisto by Alan Simpson of This Time Itâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s War, and he told me they were something different and he couldnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t stop listening to them. I got their record that was released in October, entitled â┚¬Ã…”Noirâ┚¬?. Callisto is a band from Finland that incorporates screaming with instrumental and jazzy music. This band proves the fact that you donâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t need to have heavy music with breakdowns to have screaming influenced vocals. The record is inspiring and consists of the type of music you can just lay down, relax, and listen to while you reflect on things. The screaming isnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t the typical screaming you hear in hardcore or metal bands, but something to serve as a backdrop to the music. The lyrics are inspiring and thought provoking. Callisto is going to gain a lot of popularity in 2007 and Iâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢m excited to see how far they go.
Most Overrated Band:
There are a lot of overrated bands in 2006, bands that got a lot of attention when they donâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t have that much talent. One of the bands that comes to mind is AFI. I have never been a fan of AFI but their older stuff was tolerable. Suddenly the lead singer decides he wants to change genders and everyone obsesses over their new record. I listen to a few songs on the new record and it wasnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t anything impressive. I found myself annoyed with their music. Even though their music isnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t great, they still manage to be all over MTV and have the attention of everyone. There are a bunch of bands out there that are way better than AFI and deserve to be recognized.
Most Underrated Band:
Every time I listen to Giant, I canâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t help but try and comprehend why they arenâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t more well known. They are writing music about issues that may of us are over looking, like racism, sexism, homophobia, institutionalization, gentrification, animal liberation, class struggle, eco-liberation, sobriety, post-modernism, and etc. The music is relaxing and progressive and the screams are loud enough to be heard, but quiet enough to not take away from the musical essence of the songs. Their record â┚¬Ã…”Songâ┚¬? consists of only five songs, but the record is over 50 minutes long. I advise everyone to listen to Giant and indulge yourself into inspiring music with a meaning.
Best Album Artwork / Packaging:
Norma Jeanâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s â┚¬Ã…”Redeemerâ┚¬?
Top 3 Movies:
1. As everyone already knows, â┚¬Ã…”Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstanâ┚¬?, was a huge success that brought in a lot of controversial. I rarely see movies twice, but this was one of those movies that I didnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t mind seeing twice. Every scene in this movie was hilarious and makes you admire Sacha Baron Cohen for his genius comedic ability. The movie shows the thoughts of the people and how racism does exist, the importance we place on celebrities, and the way we feel about foreigners. Some people are outraged about this film, but they do not understand the true message of his comedy. Yes, a lot of the parts in the movie might be offensive but itâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s also a huge satire on American culture. The movie is genius masterpiece and also one of the funnies movies Iâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ve ever seen. I donâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t recall another movie that had me crying so hard I was holding my stomach and whipping tears from my eyes.
2. There are always those movies that come out and donâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t get a lot of attention, but are one of the best films of the years. â┚¬Ã…”Running Scaredâ┚¬? is a extremely violent, but extremely well written movie. The movie revolves around disposing a gun and how much trouble a â┚¬Ã…”dirtyâ┚¬? gun can get people in. The filming is different and the effects are perfectly used. I found myself hooked from the opening scene and the entire movie takes you on a rollercoaster, not knowing what to expect.
3. Another movie that got a lot of attention for being outrageous was â┚¬Ã…”Jackass: Number Twoâ┚¬?. This is another movie that I managed to find myself seeing twice. The things they do are unbelievable and will leave you in disgust, but laughing for hours. I think this movie was better than the first one because the stunts were more dangerous and more creative. While watching this movie, I would the hairs on my arms would stand up straight whenever the entire theater would roar in laughter. If you havenâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t seen â┚¬Ã…”Jackass: Number Twoâ┚¬?, then I suggest renting it when it comes out and getting a bunch of friends together and laughing your head off.
Top 2 TV shows:
1. Most of the shows on television right now are just copy of things that have already been done, just with different character names. Itâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s rare to come across a show that draws the audience in and makes them think constantly. LOST has been going strong since the first episode, drawing in millions of viewers each night. LOST is a TV show, but it also incorporates different things to give audiences an edge. There are books, commercials, websites, games, and everything else that provides a little insight to the show. The plot is always expanding and it is always a mystery. The flashback aspect of the show provides information to the characterâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s life and how they connect with each other. After watching two seasons (and waiting for the 3rd to start again in February), Iâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢m drawn into the world of LOST. LOST is the only show out there that will provide hours of conversation with your friends about different theories. LOST is the only show I would leave work on Wednesdays to watch a new episode. Join the hype and buy the first two seasons of LOST on DVD.
2. Another show that has caught my attention with their unique filming and plot line is Heroes. The promos of the show didnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t give too much information away, but it gave enough to catch the attention of viewers. The show has a lot of twist and turns and the plot is well written. Every episode gives a little information and doesnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t leave the viewer disappointed. Besides LOST, Heroes is one of the only, creative, and different shows out there. The new episode comes on in January, so catch up and prepare yourself.

It was kind of a hard year to make the top 10 albums list. Next year looks promising though.

is there a master list somewhere of all the cds that came out this year??

Wow, this is alot to comment on. And I feel I must read it all before I comment, so I will do so. First off… I can’t believe Brand New wasn’t at the top of everyone’s list, but everyone has different interest. But to place Brand New as a disappointment is a disgrace. I got those early Brand New demos in the Spring, and those were a disgrace. I was disappointed and never looked forward to Brand New’s release until the day I got the entire new CD leaked. Then I was hooked. There are some songs on that album that are just classics.
I do agree with Panic being the most overrated. They are, but most of the bands in today’s scene are overrated. I did like to see Thursday’s new album all across the board. I liked it a bit I first got it, but it has yet to grow on me.
What I would like to see on this list is Blood Brother’s concert. I have been to alot, alot of shows, mostly when I wasted my money during highschool and the recent BB’s tour was amazing. All the bands, (yes, including Trail of Dead) was horrible. The 3 other bands should have been fruit thrown at them, but myself and nearly everyone else at the show was there solely for the Blood Brothers. And they were so fucking amazing. It really made me feel like I was young, well, younger again. And thanks to my friend I got some sweet photos, upfront, focused and detailed. I saw them in Detroit’s show.
It was interesting to see Brand New on someone’s best live list. I saw them, and they have never disappointed me greater than that show. Short set, and all new songs. (this was before the CD release).
And off the bat, I do have to thank you guys for hosting free xmas song downloads. As I am listening to them now.
And I had to say this, it just seems like you guys are Boys Like Girls marketing team. They are the list in countless areas. They are interesting band, but they only grown on me for about a week.
The disappoint lists are great. AFI, Thursday, Early November (I lost interest in them after their early material). Plus 44 was a great disappointment. It is funny to see how far people go to make money (Angels and Airwaves and Plus 44).
Anticipated albums:
Modest Mouse
Say Anything
Straylight Run (only interested becuz they state they are back to creating their “own” music, rather than Victory’s direction.)
Motion City Sountrack
Academy Is.. (but I have a bad feeling it will be disappointing unless William is telling the truth that it will be more mature)
And yes, Cassino. I miss Northstar beyond belief. I wish I had the chance to go back in time and see them live. And thanks for having ALexisonfire. I actually think the new one is amazing. Some songs more than others, but still overall amazing.
Well I think this was big-ass of a comment. Thanks for posting more than just one list of this for a year of music. Unlike AP, they post just one list overall, which is almost impossible, since of independent interests.

that was a long post, awesome though
