Escape the Fate Interview
As promised, I snagged some time to talk with Escape the Fate‘s drummer, Robert Ortiz while they were in Pomona for the opening day of Warped Tour 2009. This guy oozes rock and roll and everything that comes with it. Check out the (highly censored) interview.
A lot of bands play at the same time during Warped. Why should people come see Escape the Fate ?
Cause we’re f**king insane, that’s why. We’re probably the best band. Period.
Definitely. I’ve been coming to Warped for years now and I can honestly say you’re one of the best bands I’ve seen.
I had a lot of fun today.
Speaking of fun, what’s the craziest thing you’ve seen at Warped?
I don’t know, man, f**king, I don’t know. There’s always like, kids in wheelchairs f**king crowd surfing, people getting their f**king heads split open, people dying”¦I don’t know, I’ve seen some crazy shit.
If someone were to write a book about Escape the Fate, what would the title be?
F**k man, I don’t know, it’d be real f**king long though. And it’d be about tragedy, hope and f**kin'”¦it’d just be f**king crazy. It’d be a comedy most of the time, though. I dunno, I got nothing. It’d be sick though.
What is the biggest misconception about you guys?
I don’t think there is one. It’s all fu**kin’ real. Everything. All true. The problem is, it’s not that there’s not misconceptions, you know, it’s just that people choose to emphasize certain aspects of us. Even though that’s how we really are, it’s not the only thing we are, know what I mean? There’s a deeper side to us that a lot of people won’t ever see.
If this were Woodstock, what band would Escape the Fate be?
F**kin’ Jimi Hendrix.
You guys are playing the Hurley stage this year. Do you think it’s because it’s inflatable and there’s nothing Craig can climb up and jump off of?
Um, probably, dude, probably. Gotta hold us back a little bit, keep us a little tame to calm down the lawsuits.
Anything else you wanna add?
F**king come watch us at Warped Tour!
Check out some of the pictures I got during Escape the Fate’s set in Ventura! (They’re camera phone pictures so I apologize for the quality.)
Warped 2009 – Get to Know the Band: Saosin
Saosin is no stranger to touring. Their powerful stage presence has always been a perfect match for the high-energy of Warped Tour. However, this band’s first shot at Warped was sans their then frontman, Anthony Green. Green claimed to be homesick as well as displeased with the overall direction that band was heading in. He headed home and later to form the band Circa Survive. Saosin still hit Warped Tour with Phil sneed from Story of the Year filling in, but that was only a temporary fix before finally finding current lead singer, Cove Reber in a public audition.
Saosin has had great success since Reber joined the band. The band has since signed to Capitol Records and has had several great tours with bands such as Avenged Sevenfold, Coheed & Cambria. They also toured with the popular Taste of Chaos Tour in both 2006 and 2007. While on this rigorous tour schedule, Saosin released their first full-length, self-titled album. With such constant touring, it only makes sense that the band released a live album in the spring of 2008. The band then went on one more tour with Armor for Sleep and The Bled before taking a six month break from the world of touring.
When Saosin returned to touring in October of 2008, it was with UnderOATH and The Devil Wear Prada. Saosin now finds themselves touring with these bands again on Warped 2009. Together, these three bands make up the crowd favorites at Warped. With all the extensive touring, Saosin puts on a show like the seasoned professionals they are
I caught these guys for their set in Venutra, CA and was nothing short of impressed. I got to the Hurley Stage long before their set time and the crowd was already massive! Saosin is definitely a crowd favorite on this year’s Warped Tour.
Saosin is on Warped Tour all summer! Do yourself a favor and be sure to check these guys out! Be sure to follow them on Twitter for all their updates on the road!

Time and Distance – “Gravity”
West Virginia – Summer is just around the bend, and with it comes fresh air, new music and good times had by all. Not Alonerecording artists TIME AND DISTANCE will bring all facets of summer to fruition with the release of their third album Gravity onJuly 14, 2009. With years of experience as a solo artist, Greg McGowan (guitar, vox) has channeled his experience as a singer/songwriter into this trio that has already toured with the likes of Boys Like Girls, Midtown and Hit The Lights.
Produced by Rob Freeman (of Hidden in Plain View), this is the album that Time and Distance have been waiting their entire careers to make. “It was the first time we really took our time writing more songs than we actually needed so that we could pick the best of the best,” explains McGowan, “I’m more stoked on the final product than anything we’ve done before. I couldn’t be happier.”
With piano parts recorded on a laptop in their hotel bathroom and a cigarette pack guitar amp used for some of the guitar tracking, this album largely came together on the spot and is void of the excessive layering that plagues so much of today’s new music. The title track “Gravity” is “kind of a summarization of the record in that it goes through all the different themes of the entire record,” says McGowan, “it is probably my favorite song on the album and it was written entirely in the studio.”
With a new album teaser available at myspace.com/timeanddistance, Time and Distance are ready to continue going with the flow this entire summer and with each step, bring a fresh approach to the music they’re making.
Gravity is available now in select locations — check out their blog to see when you can get your copy!
In the meantime, pre-order it now on SmartPunk!
A Skylit Drive Interview
I recently had the chance to talk to lead vocalist, Michael “Jag” Jagmin from the Lodi, California based band, A Skylit Drive during their Warped Tour stop in Ventura, CA. With the recent release of their sophomore album Adelphia, these guys are proving that they’re a force to be reckoned with. Here’s what they had to say…
It’s day three of Warped Tour for you guys. How’s it feeling so far?
Awesome, still getting used to it…sleeping and waking up so early.
What time do you guys get up everyday?
8am. Every single day.
Oh my gosh, gross.
Yeah”¦
I just recently heard Adelphia and noticed it’s a giant storyline ““ how does that affect your set list? Do you break it up? Do you have to put the songs together?
Um, we just kind of go with whatever. I mean, maybe when we do like a headlining tour like, for Adelphia, then maybe we’ll try and throw the whole concept thing into it, do something fancy with videos or something, I don’t know, we’ll see.
Like Coheed and Cambria?
Yeah, exactly.
If had the chance to play one of your songs to somebody who hasn’t heard you guys in hopes of gaining them as a fan, which song would you play and why?
Probably “Wires and the Concept of Breathing” because it kind of just rounds out our whole sound. It’s a really catchy song to the point where even if somebody isn’t really into the style, they’ll still maybe be sitting there humming the chorus afterwards. I mean, it’ll pull you in if you’re into that style of music. It’s got every kind of thing that we do.
What is the craziest thing you’ve seen in the crowd at Warped?
Well, the first show, I saw a girl just rip her shirt of and start dancing in the pit and then a big dude with his shirt off started grinding behind her.
That would have been hilarious to see. Did you keep your cool on stage?
Yeah, I was laughing while singing though.
Most essential item for touring?
Huggie Wipes.
I will take your word on that. So, why should people check you guys out at Warped?
We’re fresh, we’re new, we’re always giving it our all. I mean, no show is going to to be a half-assed show with us. We’re a bunch of fun dudes.
A Skylit Drive is on Warped Tour all summer. Be sure to check them out!
