This was a group interview conducted at Warped Tour. We decided to split off into groups after a few questions. Check out more Matchbook Romance information at their website, www.matchbookromance.com.

VALIDA: What’s a typical day like on you for on the Warped Tour?
ANDY: For me it’s mayhem. We’re on a bus now, last year we weren’t. When you go into any new environment, like Warped Tour, where nothing is like it is at home, y’know, where you always keep towel here and you always keep your bag there. It’s never constant; everything is constantly changing. I find myself so confused all the time. I’ll probably spend like an hour just getting ready to go to the showers after getting outta bed, because I’m just so absent minded, it’s crazy. Then we play, we sweat, take a shower after that, we do interviews like this, we hang out with friends, and that at night-time, it’s usually like a barbecue, and everyone just hangs out and has a good time. It’s a big thing, it’s fun.
AARON: Punk Rock Summer Camp.
RYAN: Then we get on a bus and play Halo and things like that til we arrive at the next city!
JUDAS: That’s right.
RYAN: Ryan Key is going to get his ass whooped in Halo by this kid [points at Judas].
ANDY: We are seting up tournaments. Judas is very good at Halo, if you guys are familar with the game, he’s probably the best. We have faith in our boy. Ryan is now his representative.
RYAN: Yes, I’m now his manager. We have plans to take the Yellowcard and New Found Glory bus this week.
JUDAS: Motion City Soundtrack.
RYAN: Motion City Soundtrack is not a problem. Motion City Soundtrack is like a warm up.
ANDY: Which reminds me, we have to go over there later.
RYAN: I already brought the deal to Yellowcard.
JUDAS: I spoke to Ryan about it too.
ANDY: Alright, let’s talk about this later.
ALL: [laugh] That’s warped tour!

[Since there are 4 band members and 3 interviewers, we discuss splitting off and each interviewing a member or two, instead of doing a group interview. It’s hectic with a lot of discussion, but we decided to split. First the third interviewer asked her first question to the whole band]

OTHER INTERVIEWER: The thing that we’re oriented on over at RebelNoise is politics…
ANDY: Fuck Bush. [laughs and says under his breath] There’s a sexual connotation with that too, and uhh, I fully recommend that too.
RYAN: Quote of the week.
ANDY: Fuck Bush.
OTHER INTERVIEWER: So what’s your stance on the whole war situation, everything that’s going on with the election, who are you for, who are you against?
RYAN: I’m not for anybody. I’m against Bush. The war is stupid. A bunch of my friends are over in Iraq, and it pisses me off. The end.
ANDY: I think the one thing that really sucks is that there are so many hidden truths about the country, ever since the beginning, when the country first started. And this doesn’t make me unpatriotic, I love my country, but obviously everyone knows that there’s so much shady shit going down 24/7. And that’s going to happen whenever there’s a person in power. For instance, the President is just a puppet, y’know he’s got all his wigs telling him what to do and he just basically gets up there and says what he’s told. And Bush just sucks at doing that, he can’t even represent…
RYAN: He can barely speak the language.
ANDY: And I mean, I won’t even bring up Fahrenheit 9/11. That movie opened people’s eyes. THis is something that should be done all the time just to keep the country in check. But I mean, it shouldn’t even be propaganda. It should just be based on pure, hard facts, kinda like Fahrenheit 9/11, but with no propaganda-intentions behind it. Things should be released like that from people that are like almost against the government, because then you get to see what the hell is going on from different sides of it. Personally, the war, I think, I believe in my heart that it’s an oil war. I don’t believe that going after Iraq was the smartest thing to do. And just for that, and because of Bush’s beliefs about the environment, like all the bills he’s passed… He’s approved logging in national forests; like it’s a national forest it’s not supposed to be used like that. He’s approved bills to put roads through the forests, because these forest are so big and there are little towns on the outskirts. And because of the dense forest, the towns lose money because they are so hard to get to. He wants to make highways going through these forests to boost the economy. But it’s a fucking national forest, it’s not for that, it’s supposed to be untouchable, that’s the whole point. Just because of that, that one reason only, I want him out of office. I mean, there are a lot of other things too, but…

OTHER INTERVIEWER: Are those political feelings that you have, they’re obviously very strong, are those anything that you try to bring out into the open with your fans or does it musically influence anything?
ANDY: Yea, actually I’ve talked to a bunch of really big websites that actually wanted to launch with us and other huge parties, we’re basically going to launch this thing on a bunch of websites with a popup with all the things Bush has done, like just strictly facts, not my opinion or anybody’s. And if kids want to read it, that’s that, it’s up to them. I’ve put things on message boards.
AARON: Don’t vote for Nader, you’re just wasting your vote.
RYAN: Just vote for John Kerry, [laughs] there we go, made it easy for you.
[here we split up]

VALIDA: Alright, so you are Judas and you play guitar… how old are you?
JUDAS: I’m 20.

VALIDA: What’s the biggest difference between playing to a Warped Tour crowd and out in a regular club?
JUDAS: Well with a Warped Tour crowd, theres a whole lot more competition, because there are a lot of other bigger bands here. And sometimes we’re on at the same time, so sometimes fans have to choose between us and like Yellowcard or Taking Back Sunday, so that can hurt sometimes, it really depends on who is playing at the same time. Plus, it’s outside and all day long, so that wears people out. Usually the crowds aren’t as energetic at the warped Tour as they are out in the clubs just because it’s hot all day and that gets tiresome.

VALIDA: A lot of touring bands are infamous for their cellphone use, how many hours, I mean minutes, a day do you spend on average on your cellphone?
JUDAS: I hate talking on my cellphone. I’m not a phone person at all, I like to be able to look at a person when I’m talking to them. I also think it’s kinda rude to be hanging out with people and walk away to talk to someone on your cellphone. So I’m not on the phone much, I don’t use it unless I have to, so I don’t even spend an hour a day. But it’s ringing right now, and I don’t want it to, so I’m going to to turn it off. Sorry.

VALIDA: If you had to stereotype each member in the band, y’know like one is the “chick-magnet” another is the “shy one” etc. who would you say fits which role the best?
JUDAS: Well none of us get chicks, so there’s definitely no chick magnet. We’re really just a happy-go-lucky band, we just like to hang around, play on the bus, and drink beer.
VALIDA: Is there anyone that is the biggest partier?
JUDAS: I’d say Aaron, Aaron and Ryan are probably the biggest partiers. They drink the most, at least. I don’t drink that much, well until this tour, anyway.

VALIDA: Do you guys carry out any rituals each time before you go on stage?
JUDAS: We always hi-five before we go on stage, everyday, and like stretch and do warm-ups too. The weirdest thing is probably the hi-fives. We used to do movie quotes, like one of us would say a movie quote and the rest of us would guess which movie it came from. That really helped to keep us from getting nervous and stuff. But we don’t have a problem with getting nervous anymore, because we’ve been doing this for so long.

VALIDA: You guys are sharing a bus with Rufio, do you have any funny stories about them?
JUDAS: I love those guys, they’re great. I mean, we’ve only really been on the tour for like five days now. So nothing really crazy cool has happened yet. We’ve just been hanging out on the bus, drinking beer, and playing Halo, so… they’re good guys.

VALIDA: What’s your favorite thing to eat while out on tour? I know they provide meals on Warped Tour, but when you’re out on other tours, do you have any favorite fast food joints?
JUDAS: I don’t like to eat fast food. We eat so much fast food out on tour, it’s disgusting, it always makes you feel like shit when you eat that much fast food. We try to find healthier places to eat, like have you ever heard of Panera Bread? Yea, Panera Bread is good. Subway, sometimes we stop at, which is better than getting a burger at McDonalds or Taco Bell or anything like that. For the most part, anywhere which isn’t fast food, so we can just feel about ourselves and eat healthy.

VALIDA: What international touring have you guys done?
JUDAS: We’ve been to Europe twice, we went once with the Ataris and we did a UK tour with a band called Jackson. And we’ve been to Canada a few times.
VALIDA: If you could go play shows in any country, where would you go?
JUDAS: I’m looking forward to going to Japan and Hawaii definitely, which we’re hoping to do in like January.
VALIDA: Awesome.
JUDAS: And New Zealand, I wanna go to New Zealand… And Australia.

VALIDA: What’s been your favorite tour so far?
JUDAS: Favorite tour… That’s tough. I’m going to have to say the Warped Tour. There are so many bands, and we’re friends with so many. Everyday we just hang out and have a great time. Plus we’re on a bus, so we don’t have to worry about driving our van across the country.
VALIDA: If you could to pick three bands to go out on a dream tour, they could be dead or anything, who would you choose?
JUDAS: Um.. Yellowcard, Alkaline Trio, and Bad Religion.

VALIDA: Are there any smaller bands that you’d like to recommend?
JUDAS: Letter Kills, definitely. Motion City Soundtrack. Northstar. Bleed the Dream. The Matches. That pretty much covers it. Oh and A Faith Called Chaos, I just found out about them not too long ago and they kickass.

VALIDA: What’s your favorite Matchbook Romance song, or what song means the most to you?
JUDAS: My favorite song of ours is “My Eyes Burn,” just because I like the vibe of the song and the way it feels to play it. It’s fun and I just like it.

VALIDA: What’s the craziest thing that a fan has ever done to/for the you/band?
JUDAS: Yesterday in Chicago a fan brought us a scrapbook that all of our fans had made. It’s probably like 50 pages long with just pictures and fan letters and stuff like that. I was really shocked, it was so cool. It shows that our fans are really supportive of what we do.
VALIDA: That’s really cool.
JUDAS: Yea it’s awesome.

VALIDA: Alright, I’m going to have you pick a number between 1 and 18, and it will give you some random, silly question and that will be it for the interview.
JUDAS: 7.
VALIDA: 7? What’s your favorite kind of tea and what’s your favorite kind of candy?
JUDAS: I don’t like tea, I’m scared of tea. I don’t drink any kind of tea ever.
VALIDA: Coffee?
JUDAS: I drink coffee. Black coffee, no milk, no sugar.
VALIDA: Whew. And candy?
JUDAS: Candy… I like Jolly Ranchers.
VALIDA: Favorite flavor?
JUDAS: Grape. Anything grape is cool with me. I’ve got a big grape thing.

inebrios3: how are things

Stellar3716: things are going great

inebrios3: so what’s on the line up for the summer?

Stellar3716: This summer we are going on tour with our buddies from Indiana called Blue Sky Goodbye! Itï¿Â½s gonna be an awesome time because we really like those guys alot. They are on Uprising Records

inebrios3: Rad! Any dates so far?

Stellar3716: yep we are going to be starting the tour off on July 8th in Erie, PA and goes as far north as Long Island, down to Florida, over to Indiana then back home. We are all stoked

inebrios3: yeah man that should be awesome!

Stellar3716: yea we just want to get our music out to as many people as we can

inebrios3: Are you guys going to be recording some new stuff anytime soon?

Stellar3716: yea our new record, our Split EP with Wide of the Mark comes out June 6th then we will be back in the studio around early August to record 5 new songs for our next EP plus we are gonna shop to a bunch of labels with it.

inebrios3: so have you guys heard anything from Drive-Thru? I know you guys were kinda behind the doors with them

Stellar3716: well we are going to keep talkin to them and hopefully something good will come out of it! With the next 5 songs we do we will have a better idea of what will happen!

inebrios3: tight man, any other labels you guys are wanting to hear from?

Stellar3716: umm no we havent really talked to any other labels right now but we are going to start shopping to a bunch of labels soon and hopefully we can start some buzz with the tour we are doing this summer. We want to keep our options open.

Stellar3716: so if your an owner of a label and reading this….sign my fucking band

inebrios3: haha, right on!

inebrios3: so what are you guys up to in your spare time besides getting backstage betty’s and whatnot

Stellar3716: well we all work and stuff and we all go to school so we are mostly real busy with that. And we just go out and have fun hanging out with our buddies in Wide of the mark who we are putting that Split EP out with.

Stellar3716: they are our close friends

inebrios3: awesome man, so letï¿Â½s rewind a bit

inebrios3: who are some of your biggest influences musically

Stellar3716: umm like who we kind of like get inspiration to write music from?

inebrios3: yeah
inebrios3: and who do you guys listen to

Stellar3716: well we all like Spitalfield who we played with a few times, Punchline who are amazing,ya know old school blink and green day! Canï¿Â½t be a pop punk band without that! And i listen to alot of Alt Rock like the Smashing Pumpkins and stuff but we dont song Alt rock in any way shape or form! Haha

inebrios3: true enough my friend. These new songs sound amazing, anything you want to say about them?

Stellar3716: well it took us a few months to write those songs because we wanted to make them the best we could and this time around we wanted to sing about something other than the vagina and the women so we wrote the songs based on personal conflict and every day situtations that people go through. We try and keep it real!

inebrios3: smells like progress to me
inebrios3: what kind of gear are you guys playing with?

Stellar3716: I use Gibson Les Paul Studio guitat with Mesa Boogie Single Rectifier and Marshall 1960A Cab
Dan uses a Marshall JCM 900 and a Marshall 1960A Cab with a Gibson SG
Joe uses a Ampeg 6X10 with an MXR Pedal
And Ryan our Drummer uses an old Vintage 1969 Ludwig set

My American Heart Interview April 18th, 2004

My American Heart
Eric: well to start this off, I have been listening to my American heart (no way out) for a while now. can you tell me a little background of the band and its members, and how you fellas formed

Jesse: Well we formed back in November of 2002 doing covers. Like Rufio, and Fenix tx and all that stuff. We were all best friends just messing around and it sounded alright. So we got serious and started writing songs…. but we sucked.

Eric: what are the members of the band an the instruments they play, so people who haven’t heard you guys know

Jesse: Me, Jesse – bass / Larry – vocals / Jeremy – guitar / Clint – More guitars / Steven ï¿Â½ drums

Eric: killer, were did u guys play your first shows at, and how was the crowd response

Jesse: Our first show was at a battle of the bands at this big name venue called Canes in Mission beach. We actually ended up winning. We beat 30 other bands. We were tiny, haha.

Eric: well man that doesn’t sound like sucking to me
Eric: haha
Eric: so, when did you guys realize that you were good? I mean like people were actually coming to shows to see you, and how was your response to that

Jesse: After we played with this band called Off By One, and became friends with this big band in San Diego called Larger Than Life. They were the bomb and they got us to open for them a few times. Our draw every show kept growing from like the 70 people to over 120.

Eric: wow, thatï¿Â½s awesome.

Jesse: way.

Eric: now I have loved u guys since the first day I listened to your stuff. I have heard many bands with high voice singers and I hated them, but for some reason I can’t get enough of your music. do you think that a singer with a particularly high voice makes you guys original like yellowcard with a violin or something corperate with a piano?

Jesse: Yeah. I think it’s a pretty good thing. The thing is that we get so many different opinions on Larry’s voice. Some people love it, and some people aren’t really big fans of it. But it sets us apart, it’s original. I hate how people always go “man you guys just sound like any other band” and then they say our singer sucks.. saying uhh.. everyone else has a sucky singer. I love it. Mm

Eric: so, you do like his voice?
Eric: so what would you categorize My American Heart as?

Jesse: yes
Jesse: I like his voice yeah

Eric: here

Jesse: hmmm
Jesse: my American heart…
Jesse: I’d just say progressive / aggressive rock and roll and add a little ball squeezing.

Eric: haha, a little ball squeezing, what kind is that

Jesse: I donï¿Â½t know!? The squeezing that makes you scream. it really brings the mosh. Haha

Eric: hahaha

Eric: so have you guys ever had those crazy screaming fans come up to you after shows?

Jesse: haha NO. they just do it while we play. I like it better that way anyway. We get some little ones sometimes, people asking us to sign something or take a picture. Wait we did have a group of people like that up in l.a when we played there. they were all over Jeremy

Eric: haha
Eric: that is awesome man

Jesse: way

Eric: so tell me about your lyrics, at first it seemed like you guys had the same old lyrics as other bands but they are a lot deeper than that
Eric: who writes the lyrics, and were do they come from?

Jesse: Larry writes all the lyrics.. he gives me like just pages and pages of words… and I arrange them into the music. most of our stuff is about what he’s dealing with. once in awhile i’d write a few words and incorporate that into his lyrics as well. it usually sounds great

Eric: that it does
Eric: how do you guys go about writing songs?
Eric: do you just go with a riff and move on or?

Jesse: I write most of the music. get the lyrics from Larry. put it together on acoustic. then just show it to all the other guys and thatï¿Â½s when the other members work their magic

Eric: nice very nice

Jesse: indeed

Eric: so have you guys been looking for any sort of record label, or do you plan to just go and let them come to you?

Jesse: after we released the songs on pure, we’ve got a crazy amount of emails from very big indie labels.. about 7 or 8 or so. and we hope it doesn’t stop. it’s good to have more to choose from you know? get the best deal possible for us.

Eric: so do you plan on signing with any of them or just to keep looking?

Jesse: well if the label gives us something good, of course we’re going to go with them. but if not, yeah we’ll keep looking. that’s how it should be.. right?

Eric: yea man
Eric: so what do you guys plan to do next, for example: music style, places to go, any changes?

Jesse: music style is pretty much going to stay the same, if it does change im guessing maybe a little more harder. we just wanna get out and tour and show everyone what we could do. we’re mainly a band you’d want to see live, and hopefully after the cd comes out, we get a big tour goin on for everyone. that’s it. we bring the mosh.
Jesse: lol

Eric: a live band huh, what makes your live performance so….live?

Jesse: just watch us. that’s all I have to say. and if you cant check out our videos on our site

Eric: what makes you so energized on stage? is there any songs you listen to before going on?

Jesse: good. what do you think?

Jesse: yeah.. I listen to copeland and the appleseed cast.. The Beatles. they get me pumped up

Jesse: haha just kidding. I feed off the crowd most of the time.. and if not the crowd.. Steven the drummer

Eric: what do you think about on stage?
Eric: oh man

Eric: does he go crazy or what?

Jesse: you thought I was serious about the Beatles!? you’re crazy!
Jesse: yeah he’s fun

Eric: yea
Eric: well you never know man, some of the most hardcore bands listen to like dashboard
Eric: not that that is bad

Jesse: haha.. hardcore kids are really just emo kids that scream.

Eric: you got that

Jesse: you got dat bomb ass pussay

Eric: so what were you doing before the whole band got together, and side jobs?

Jesse: we’re all dumb and donï¿Â½t have jobs. haha mainly we were just focusing on school. this stupid band ruined our edumucation!

Eric: haha, fuck yea. mine too

Jesse: haha!

Eric: well I believe that is all I got

Eric: if someone gave you 50 thousand dollars a year to quit the band and work at BK would you?

Jesse: haha BK?
Jesse: burger king?

Jesse: HAHA. 50 thousand dollars a year.. hmmmm thatï¿Â½s a toughy

Eric: go ahead

Bryce: First off i would to thank you guys for the awesome show, it was a really good time.

Trevor: Sure
Jeff: Thanks
Trevor: Thank You

Bryce: Ok first off lets get your names and what you play in the band.

Trevor: My name is Trevor Sellers and i play bass, in a band!
Jeff: I’m Jeff Schneeweis i sing and play guitar.

Bryce: Alright very cool.

Bryce: You guys have been touring non stop since your album came out.

Jeff: Pretty Much
Trevor: For the most part, yeah. Before it came out actually.
Jeff: Yeah, actually before it came out. It’s been really good. You’ve asked how it’s been?

Bryce: Yeah

Jeff: It’s been really fun, we have met a lot of cool people.

Bryce: Any bigger shows, bigger then tonight, i know it’s not very big here.

Jeff: Yeah, i mean we just played with Reliant K on the west coast. Those are big shows, that was fun, a good tour.

Bryce: So who has been your favorite?

Trevor: Bleach
Jeff: Or Pax too, it’s hard to tell.
Trevor: I think the most fun i’ve had was with Bleach and John Reuben.

Bryce: So pretty much all good friends?

Jeff: Oh yeah
Trevor: Yeah

Bryce: Do you guys prefer being on the road, or do you like recording too?

Trevor: Touring is so much fun, but then like i think when it kinda feels like time to write new songs that seems like fun. We haven’t really done that yet, like we didn’t tour at all, we wrote songs and then we started touring. I think it would fun to take a break.

Bryce: Have you guys written anything new? I know your album just came out in August.

Jeff: Yeah we played that new one tonight. And we have some in the works, but they aren’t complete, but we are going to start writing, putting it all together soon here.

Bryce: The kids have been reacting pretty good to the shows?

Jeff: Yeah it’s been really good.
Trevor: Yeah

Bryce: What can i find in your CD players right now?

Trevor: Today we listened to Beloved. We listened to As I Lay Dying. We listened to a lot of Copeland.
Jeff: Blindside, Emery. We have so many CD’s its unreal.

Bryce: Do you guys fight over what your going to listen too?

Jeff: No. We actually kinda are the same.
Trevor: There are certain times where its like we don’t want to listen to something.
Jeff: Yeah

Bryce: So something laid back now and harder later?

Trevor: It’s been a lot laid back lately just cause we have a lot of CD’s like that. They are nice to drive too.

Bryce: Have you guys heard of of Spitalfield?

Trevor: Yeah heard of them.

Bryce: Thats good stuff, I have been listening to them a lot.

Bryce: So do you guys have any crazy stories from being on the road?

Jeff: Wait wasn’t that just one we had or something?
Trevor: No that was Sensfield
Jeff: Oh
Trevor: Or something like that.
Jeff: Alright
Trevor: Haha ok.

Jeff: Oh yeah, that one we can’t say that one. Bleach
Trevor: Oh that one
Jeff: No we can’t say that one. The motel one.
Trevor: Yeah we can’t say that one, lol.
Jeff: Other then that i wish we could say that one. But that was pretty funny.
Trevor: I’m trying to think of crazy stuff. We don’t go out and like find trouble at all so it’s like. It hasn’t come to us yet so we have been pretty lucky.
Jeff: We try to have fun!! Oh yeah tell them about the guy that chased us.

Trevor: Yeah and we kept yelling at him through this megaphone we have.

Jeff: Just like total noises.
Trevor: We like saw him all over town, like two or three different times. Finally the last time we were in the parking-lot at the laundry-mat and we yelled at him. He put down his food and starting chasing after our car.

Jeff: He was driving so we just took off in the van.
Trevor: There was traffic coming so we couldn’t pull out in the street so we pulled into this alley. He ran up and hid in these bushes.
Jeff: He threw a water bottle at us.
Trevor: It was pretty crazy, he was like chasing after the car.
Jeff: We weren’t doing it to be rude, we were just having fun, making noises.

Bryce: I heard Side Walk Slam was held at gunpoint one time?

Trevor: Oh yeah they said they were at a Waffle House and somebody came in a demanded everyone to put there wallets on the table. The drummer or somebody stood up and the guy like put the gun up against him.
Jeff: When was this?
Trevor: Like on their last tour or something.
Jeff: Wow

Bryce: Probably don’t want that happening to you.

Jeff: No.
Trevor: No not at all.

Bryce: I haven’t been here before. We don’t get very many concerts here so we try to hit everyone we can.

Bryce: I just saw your video for “Starting Line”, your in the back of a truck trailer, how was that?

Jeff: That was awesome, it was like the most fun we ever had. All the kids were in there, it was so energetic.
Trevor: Like on our end was all the lights and that was the closed end. The open end was like a walk-in freezer.
Jeff: It didn’t even matter, where we were was really hot.

Bryce: Were those lighting effects actual lights or were they just put in the video.

Jeff: There were floodlights behind us, and like lights on the sides. But they added some stuff to the video.

Eric: well first off, tell me your names, and the other band members names, and what you all play

Alex: Alex (me) and Ryan both play guitar and sing

Eric: how long have you guys been a band?

Alex: since February of last year
Alex: so about 1 full year

Eric: did you have a few small bands before Adelphi?

Alex: we had a really crappy pop punk band called “fat Austin”

Eric: and how did that turn out

Alex: we played a really big battle of the bands
Alex: in DC
Alex: and we got second place out of 50 bands
Alex: so we started getting really serious

Eric: so how did Adelphi form?

Alex: adelphi formed in February of 2003 when our drummer quit
Alex: and we found tom
Alex: and started a whole new band

Eric: and, tell me what enthused productions is, a record label or?

Alex: nah
Alex: it’s my brother’s company, he just loves music and really wants to help out local bands

Ryan: sucks to be on a tour where everyone is doing their own thing

Ryan: fortunately, we were lucky enough to have toured with amazing bands thus far.. but more importantly they were all great people

Eric: do you plan on touring more this year?

Ryan: oh definitely
Ryan: as soon as we get done with the new record
Ryan: it’s been weird for me to be home so much

Ryan: I am really excited about this record

Ryan: well we write from where we have been and what that has entailed

Ryan: I like all those bands alot… actually I think those are the only bands from that genre that I do like
Ryan: ohh we all range from the Beatles to u2 to lagwagon to metallica

Eric: how about militia records, how long have you guys been with them?

Ryan: well black lines is the only record we have released with them, but
we have known Chad and Roy for what seems like forever

Eric: awesome

Ryan: back when they were just starting out as a booking agency

Eric: that’s cool
Eric: would you say they have helped you get out there, and do everything else successful you guys have been doing?

Ryan: they definitely helped us out with releasing our record
Ryan: we are not on that label, so everything they did was out of there
willingness to help

Ryan: Columbia records

Eric: how has that been going for you guys

Ryan: they have super supportive of our indie following

Ryan: I am just so thankful we are on Columbia right now considering how the record industry is
Ryan: amazing people who are completely concerned with our careers as much as they are with theirs

Eric: have you guys had your doubts about signing, or doing any other big moves as a band?

Ryan: no.. I mean, we all understand some kids will start shouting “sell out” and charge us with this and that, but we are more concerned with getting our music to as many people as possible

Ryan: we are not changing who we are to make a few extra bucks

Eric: well a while back I recall seeing you guys on MTV, what was that all about, and how did it come about?

Ryan: well the guy who did our video for permanent works at MTV and he really wanted to do a you hear it first for us
Ryan: and I guess all the MTV execs were into the idea

Eric: awesome

Ryan: so it got aired
Ryan: really exciting
Ryan: also really weird

Eric: did you guys get interviewed by MTV also?

Ryan: well the guy who did our video interviewed us as well

Ryan: haha, not really… just to do what we have been doing so far

Eric: tell me how long you guys have been and band and were you got your name

Alex: we have been a band around a year
Alex: we got our name from a friend of ours named Steve he helped us with it

Eric: I have been to a few of your shows and I would have to say you guys would fit in with “the hardcore” group, what are some of your influences

Jon: I would say Alexis on fire, the Bled, atreyu, senses fail, Thursday
Jon: avenged sevenfold
Alex: The Bled, Senses Fail, Fear before the March of flames, Alexisonfire, Coheed and Cambria, Avenged Sevenfold
Chad: The Bled, Thursday, Senses Fail, Avenged Seven Fold and The Cure

Eric: good choices
Eric: I enjoy all of those bands

Alex: those are great bands

Eric: would you say that by them influencing you guys, it ends up in your own music

Jon: kind of
Justin: not at all
Chad: some stuff I guess, we kind of have our own sound though, at least I think so

Jon: we don’t really write songs and try to sound like them it just seems to end up that way
Chad: yea
Alex: We don’t try to sound like anyone, we just write what we like and feel, and this is how it comes out

Eric: how do you go about writing new songs?

Chad: someone starts with a riff and we just start writing to it, and adding onto it
Jon: well if someone has something we will write to it
Alex: we usually start with a guitar riff and it just builds
Jon: then Alex write the singing then Chad writes the screaming

Eric: and were do the lyrics come in

Chad: we write the lyrics last

Justin: our music is more of a calough and array of all musical ideas pored into something we call music
Alex: Me and Chad just write what we feel, a lot of them people probably think are fucked up
Chad: yea, Jon called us killers for the last set of lyrics we wrote lol

Eric: so Alex, were do lyrics like “jealousy was the murder weapon” come from, what influences you to write lyrics

Alex: umm, its about a chick liking some other guy and her boyfriend knows it and gets really Jealous about it and kills the guy

Eric: sounds interesting, so would you say most of your lyrics come from things happening in your life

Alex: kind of, I think a lot of it is just me venting all my emotions through my lyrics, a lot of them are about death, lol, I don’t know why
Alex: it’s just what comes out

Alex: I don’t think of a topic for the song I just start writing
Alex: and then decide what it all means at the end

Alex: we plan to have an EP our pretty soon
Jon: one should be out mid March

Chad: I think our style will stay the same…we seem really comfortable where we are now

Chad: ….us a free meal.. we got pissed and later that night Jon went and shit in a paper towel and threw it all over the walls and in the sink and on the mirror, we got chased out of that place by a crazy Chinese lady

Tryst Interview February 18th, 2004

Eric: to start this off, tell me the names of the members, and what they each play

Conor: well Nathan is vocals, Dave is guitar, Josh is guitar, Conor is drums and Tyler is bass

Eric: alrighty
Eric: so were are you guys from?

Conor: Littleton, CO straight out of Denver coast?

Eric: hehe, awesome
Eric: so, how did Tryst form, and were did the name Tryst come from?

Conor: Well, I would say Tryst started in the Spring of 2003 as Suburban Heartache, We played a few shows and decided we didn’t like our style, name or anything. So we took a few months off, regrouped with all new songs and style and came up with the name Tryst. Tryst means the secret meeting between two lovers like Romeo and Juliet. We have been Tryst for about 6 months now and keep progressing everyday.

Eric: killer
Eric: so how did you guys meet and start playing as suburban heartache?

Conor: Well, we all go to the same high school so we pretty much are with each other all the time. Josh and Dave started playing together and decided they wanted to form a band, so they got the Brigman brothers, Nathan and Tyler. So they were set all but without a drummer. They went through about 4 different drummers before they actually picked a drummer. Thatï¿Â½s where Conor comes in to fill the gap they’ve been missing.

Eric: intense
Eric: so, under what genre of music would you put yourselves in?

Conor: You know thatï¿Â½s a toughy because we could classify our selves as so many different types of music. But if I would have to pick one it would probably under The screamo genre.

Eric: sweet
Eric: so, do you guys play a lot of shows?

Conor: so far this year has gone really slow, not that many shows but in march 2004 we have set up a lot of shows and are just going to keep doing that. We are planning on doing a mini-tour through the southwest

Eric: oh really, have you guys been on a tour before?

Conor: no but there is a first time for everything

Eric: that there is

Conor: we plan on going with a band that has gone on tour before to show us the ropes

Eric: good idea
Eric: so do you have any shows that stand out in your mind, maybe something funny happened?

Conor: oo haha when we were Suburban Heartache we were playing at Tim’s Net Guru and it was a bad night no one was having fun and to top it off Nathan was going crazy and he ripped the mic cord out of the plug-in and he ran to put it back in and tripped and fell flat on his face. it was hilarious

Eric: sounds funny
Eric: lol
Eric: so were do you see tryst going in the future, musically. Do you plan to hit it big?

Conor: We are going to try really hard. We love the music we play and we love playing in front of people that enjoy it as well. Itï¿Â½s hard to hit it big as you’ve said but we are going to try to get as far as we can. and it’d really help if we could get help along the way.

Eric: awesome
Eric: so, how do you go about writing songs, lyrically, and Musically

Conor: musically, usually josh rights a part to the song or all the song. he writes both guitar parts and at practice we just play it, revise it along the way and make it a song. Lyrically Nathan just sings whatever he wants, he just lets it out or should you say “improvise” a lot for the first couple times so you add that together and you have a tryst song

Eric: so were do you get your lyrics from?

Conor: Nathan writes all the lyrics except for one song called “Georgia in the Colorado” josh wrote that, but Nathan gets his lyrics from the past with girls, friends, bad times, good times, anything he can think of he puts its into words

Eric: cool
Eric: do you guys plan on hitting the studio anytime and getting maybe an EP out?

Conor: actually we are planning on going into the studio during the summer and putting out an EP if you’ve heard our demo, the EP is going to be a little more “harder” and deeper. We haven’t come up with a name with it yet

Eric: awesome, I can’t wait to hear some new stuff
Eric: well, I have been to many of your shows, and I would have to say I love you stage performance
Eric: what do you think about while youï¿Â½re up there?

Conor: well I would say our past stage performances have been horrible but the couple last shows have been really good and better. We think to have fun not to impress. I mean we want to have people like us but we like to have fun and mess around and just play in front of people.

Eric: sweet
Eric: while were on the subject, what would you say your best experience has been?

Conor: the best experience… hhmm there has been a lot of “the best ones,” one of them was we were playing at Grandpa’s music box and we were playing In your List and the crowd starts singing in on it as well. Nathan didn’t even have to sing because we could hear the crowd sing.. There is nothing like hearing other people sing your songs also in that same night some random person got up on stage and starting singing/screaming with Nathan.

Eric: I bet that was super cool
Eric: alright well before I let you go, is there anything else you would like to say?

Conor: yeah

The Secret HandShake

The Secret HandShake will be performing in New York City tonight where they will be launching their album, One Full Year.
