Record a song with Switchfoot – Charity Auction
Switchfoot is teaming up with Bidfire, a competitive shopping site, to offer one lucky fan the ultimate experience: the opportunity to record a song with the band during a deluxe, four-day trip to the group’s hometown of San Diego, CA. The resulting track will be released on iTunes and MySpace.com. No musical talent is required ““ the winning bidder can opt to play on the session or just help shape the song.
“Record a Song with Switchfoot,” Bidfire’s first charity auction, will benefit StandUp for Kids, a non-profit organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of at-risk and homeless youth (www.standupforkids.org). It will begin on Friday, May 28th, at 12:00 PM M/PT at http://bidfire.com/switchfoot but fans are encouraged to purchase bids in advance to guarantee a “seat” since the auction is expected to sell out. Bidfire is a different type of online auction. Users purchase bids for $1 and it only takes a single bid to win. The last bid placed when the auction closes wins. The closing price of the Switchfoot auction is estimated to be between $5 and $15.
The winning bidder will be flown to San Diego and put up at The Grand Del Mar, a Five Diamond resort. In addition to recording with Switchfoot, they’ll have VIP access to the band’s June 24th show at the San Diego County Fair and the events of the weekend’s 6th Annual Switchfoot Bro-Am, including a charity auction on June 25th and the concert/surf contest on June 26th. The Bro-Am will once again benefit San Diego area chapters of StandUp for Kids.
How the Switchfoot Auction works…
Register today on the site at http://www.bidfire.com/switchfoot to reserve your seat

Attend the auction on May 28th at 12pm Pacific and bid! The last bidder wins (we expect that the closing price of the auction will be between $5 and $15)

Switchfoot Go Independent
Switchfoot have decided to part ways with Columbia Records. You can read a message from Jon Foreman below.
greetings everybody!
I’ve got some exciting news: after several years of trying to make things work over at Columbia we have officially severed our ties with sony to pursue making music independently. We are thankful for the incredible success that our partnership has produced over the years, yet within this ever changing business there can arise differences in vision and goals. These differences have now come to a point where we feel like parting ways would be best for us, and best for sony.
As a hands-on band, we feel so grateful for our newfound freedom. We are continually dreaming up ways to bridge the gap between the audience and the stage; this feels like an incredible step in that direction. A huge thank you to bob, amy, nicole and tim over at
columbia who were there from the beginning. We would also like to thank our musical family here in the states and abroad for sticking with us through these columbia years. We couldn’t have done it without you! We’ll have more information for you as things shape up. In the meantime, here are several projects already in the works for the next year:
-four jon foreman solo ep’s
(tentatively titled fall, winter, spring, and summer)
-the real sean jon
(a collaboration between jon foreman and sean watkins of nickel creek fame)
-a new switchfoot record in ’08
(the first tracks 13 tracks were cut this week!)

Switchfoot: “Oh Gravity†will be one of my favorites of 2007 even though it technically came out in 2006 (by a few days)

Switchfoot at the Avalon – March 30th, 2007
Switchfoot at the Avalon Theatre
March 30th, 2007
Hollywood, CA
The Foreman brothers, Jon and Tim, and good friend Chad Butler started the band Switchfoot in 1996 in San Diego. Now six albums and countless world tours later, the band has been nominated for a grammy, and won several Dove awards. With the release of Oh! Gravity, the band has begun to regain the commercial success that was somewhat lost with the harsh reception of their last album, Nothing Is Sound.
Performing at the Avalon Theatre, with the bill boasting only two acts and a $25 ticket, one would expect a good show from both artists. Unfortunately, I missed most of Copeland, but upon entering and hearing the poor mix and Aaron being under the weather, I wasn’t too disappointed with my miscalculation of time.
Switchfoot took the stage, now as a five-piece with additional musicians Jerome Fontamillas (keys) and Drew Shirley (guitar), the band dove straight into their blend of edgy pop-rock. Jon Foreman’s voice was at the best I’ve ever heard it. Pulling songs from as far back as Learning To Breathe, the band also featured a three-piece string section on certain songs.
It’s with great regret that two albums ago is when I last heard new music from Switchfoot that I truly loved. When I used to feel the same about The Beautiful Letdown, the live performance totally turned my perspective upside down and the album put itself in the same league as their prior work. In all honesty, Nothing Is Sound and Oh! Gravity just don’t cut it for me. With tracks like “Happy Is a Yuppy Word” and “American Dream,” while the lyrics are decent, the melodies and choruses border the land of outright obnoxious. Since I’m sure they appeal to some, I will choose to disregard these few songs from my opinion of the show as a whole.
As I said earlier, Jon Foreman has never sounded better than he did at this show. His stage presence incarcerated the audience’s attention as he ventured into the crowd and scaled the right balcony. I completely forgot there was still four others playing on the stage. However, it was the band as a whole that created such an appealing live show. Tim and Jerome’s background vocals filled up any empty space, and Drew’s guitar work allowed Jon to put down the guitar and focus primarily on his vocal work. Chad’s drumming was just as solid as it has always been. Switchfoot impressed me far more than I had ever imagined, and after two years without, they have again won my praise.
